Since arriving at Llangollen Heritage Railway in 1986, our class 08 shunter 08195 has reliably served the railway almost continuously. Often described as one of the most important locos to the operation of our railway, it has provided traction for many of the engineering trains. It has been utilized in extending the line, routine permenant way and infrastructure maintenance and restoration. In addition to this, it is used on Berwyn shuttles and driver experiences.

 The locomotive has worked hard during its almost 40 years service and has been very reliable.  With little major work done during the last 25 years, our 08 now requires a phased scheme of overhaul works to ensure it can be returned to use and continue to provide the valuable, unglamourous behind the scenes work.

Phase 1 – Minimum scope to return to service - £7,500 – required now

Following excellent works by members of the MPD in stripping the EE 6 Cylinder engine – (Head and piston removal), it has been found that the big end shells on two of the cylinders are very worn, and we need to replace these. Also, the piston rings are worn and require replacement.  This comes with the associated oil and gasket changes and the connecting rods also require new bushes.

Phase 2 – Improvements in operation and reliability - £8,000   - required in next 12 months

Currently the locomotive suffers from poor battery condition and charging is an issue. We would like to replace the batteries and the Auto Voltage Regulator to rectify this.

Additionally, we would like to fit an oil priming pump (as fitted to 08202) to remove the current manual priming situation and a fuel transfer pump- again to replace the current manual operation

We are therefore seeking donations to raise money for phases 1 & 2 of the power-unit overhaul.  Phases 3 & 4 will follow in the coming years.

How you can help! £50 a Ring!

The engine has 6 cylinders, with each piston requiring 5 new piston rings – 3 compression rings and 2 oil control rings. With rings costing £50 each, we are looking for individuals to sponsor a ring to help get our 08 running again. 

Additionally, there are larger ticket items that we would be most grateful if people want to donate towards in full or part, for example

• Big end shells at £300 per pair (6 pairs needed)
• Oil Change at £600
